  7. QUICK START

  9. * Insert CD in drive and double-click on the "BEGIN" icon in the open CD window. A Main Menu will appear. All software installation and launching is done through this Main Menu.

  11. INTERACTIVE VIEWER USE
  12.  
  13. The interactive viewer takes you on a photographic journey along the Lewis & Clark Trail, telling this amazing story with images and text, as well as maps to show where each image was photographed.  You may choose to view the trail in 2D, 3D anaglyph, or 3D side-by-side.

  15. * Double-click on the "BEGIN" icon to launch the Main Menu. 
  16. * Click on the "Interactive Viewer" button to select an image view.

  18. Choosing an Image View

  20. Click on one of the following buttons:

  22. * "2D Images" - Standard images
  23. * "3D Anaglyph" - These are true stereo images and are viewed using the enclosed red and blue 3D glasses.  Place the red lens over the left eye.
  24. * "3D Side-by-Side" - These are a second type of stereo image, following the tradition of the original stereoscope cards and viewers.   These images are viewed using stereocard viewing glasses (not included).  These glasses and other 3D products are available on the Internet from Berezin Stereo Photography Products at www.berezin.com/3d

  26. Image Navigation

  28. Each image in the Interactive Viewer is displayed on the screen with its descriptive text.  The red dot on the trail shows the area where the picture was taken.  The image number appears between the blue arrows.

  30. * Click on the blue "Right Arrow" to move to the next image.
  31. * Click on the blue "Left Arrow" to move to the previous image.
  32. * Click on the "Magnifying Glass" to view the image full screen (this feature is not needed for 3D side-by-side images because they are already at the appropriate viewing size).
  33. * Click anywhere on the full screen image to return to the Image Navigation menu.
  34. * Click on the "Maps" button to view several more detailed maps of the trail.
  35. * Click on a trail location name on the background map to jump to that spot in the image collection.
  36. * Click on the "Main" button to return to the Interactive Menu menu.

  38. Map Navigation

  40. Once an image view has been selected, click on the "Maps" button at any time to access the Maps Menu.  Choose between a Reference Map or several detailed maps.

  44. * Click on the "Reference Map" to view a map that covers the entire trail.  
  45. * Click and hold the mouse button to scroll across the trail.
  46. * Click on the blue arrow to return to the Maps Menu.

  48. Map Detail

  50. * Click on the "Map Detail" button to view detailed maps of the trail.
  51. * Click on the blue "Right Arrow" to move to the next map.
  52. * Click on the blue "Left Arrow" to move to the previous map.
  53. * Clicking the blue "Left Arrow" from the first map will return you to the Maps Menu.

  55. IMAGE BROWSER USE

The Image Browser (Extensis Portfolio) is a program seperate from the Interactive Viewer that allows you to browse the catalog of images at your own pace, view them full screen, and search image captions by feature or place name.  This software does not need to be installed onto your computer. The Image Browser contains other features which you may discover on your own or by clicking on the "Help" menu in the program.

  59. * Double-click on the "BEGIN" icon to launch the Main Menu. 
  60. * Click on the "Image Browser" button to launch the browser.

  64. * In the Image Browser, double-click on any image thumbnail to view image full screen.

  66. Find/Search Captions in the Browser

  68. * In the browser, captions are stored in the "description" field for each image. 
  69. * To search captions, click on the "Magnifying Glass" button in the tool bar. In the "Find" dialog box, type a word or words in the search field (i.e. "Lewis", or "Fort Mandan") and click on the "Find" button.
  70. * To find all images again, click on the "Magnifying Glass" button in the tool bar, then click on "Find All" in the "Find" dialog box.

  72. Slide Show

  74. The Image Browser allows you to view an on-screen slide show.

  76. * Click on "Catalog" from the menu and choose "Slideshow" to begin the slide show.
  77. * The bottom of the screen contains controls for the slide show.  Hitting "ESC" or the "square" button will exit the slide show.

  79. Catalog Views

  81. There are 3 different views in the image catalog.  The view that first appears when you open the catalog is called the "Record" view.  You may switch to the "Thumbnail" view or the "List" view by clicking on one of the three view icons in the tool bar.

  87. The Image Browser's "Help" feature is optimized to use Microsoft Explorer.  It also works with Netscape Communicator, but runs slower.

  89. Monitor Settings

  91. The image catalog is best viewed with a monitor resolution setting of 800 x 600 or higher.

  93. INSTALL SCREEN SAVER

  95. * From the Main Menu, click on the "Install Screen Saver" button.  Restart computer when completed.

  97. INTERNET CONNECTION

  99. Note: Internet connection requires that you have an internet service provider and internet browser on your computer.

  101. * On the Main Menu, click on the "Resources" button.  Then click on the "Internet Resources" button to connect to additional information on the internet that compliments the CD.
  102. * The "Extensis" website may be reached at www.extensis.com.  It is full of great user tips, free upgrades and trouble-shooting tips for the Image Browser (Extensis Portfolio Browser).

  104. IMAGE SPECIFICATIONS

  106. * Images are in TIF format for your convenience.  They may be used in any image or publishing program that can recognize TIF images.
  107. * Images are located in the "Images" folder on the CD.

  109. 3D Enthusiasts
  110.  
  111. * Actual 3D anaglyphs TIF files and 3D side-by-side TIF files are located in the "3Dimages" folder on the CD.  These may be used for viewing with specialized 3D viewing devices.
